White Wines

Chard Sur Lie

Fine, dry Vermentino with citrus notes and slight oak secondary to abbreviated barrel aging. Most commonly paired with seafood and other dishes suitable for fine white wine.

Pearl

An exceptionally favorable growing season ripened our grapes to perfection allowing us to blend together this “gem” of a wine! Our Chardonel grapes, a cross between Chardonnay and Sevyl, combine flawlessly with Vermentino, an Italian grape used for high quality wines. This dry white wine pairs perfectly with fresh seafood from our region, white meats, and Italian dishes but is versatile enough that there are really no wrong answers. Just like those who find a pearl in an oyster, if you are drinking a bottle of our Pearl, consider yourself lucky!

Bord Blanc

The famous Bordeaux region of France is well known for its red blends but also produces a classic white blend composed primarily of Semillion and Sauvignon Blanc. Both of these varietals were planted in our initial blocks and have thrived in our local terroir. Ideal fruit was harvested and processed after which the wine was transferred to high quality oak casks for aging to achieve desired flavors and taste. The Semillion displayed remarkable “fatness,” a term that denotes exceptional concentration of fruit flavor with perfect richness on the palate. Meticulous care and blending enables us to achieve this extraordinary final product.

Miscela Italiana

Two of the most prominent Italian varietals, Pinot Grigio & Vermentino, were thoughtfully and meticulously blended to perfection to create our Miscela Italiana. We capitalized on a reas placed into the highest quality oak barrels soon after harvest. This fine, dry blend of vinifera varieties exceeded our expectations and is an exceptionally well balanced wine.

Vermentino

Fine, dry Vermentiono with citrus notes and slight oak secondary to abbreviated barrel aging. Traditionally grown in Italy where it makes fine, dry white wines, we took a chance growing Vermentino and it has exceeded all expectations! The grapes have thrived in our climate and our warmer growing season actually allows this late ripening variety to exhibit unrivaled complexity in its flavor profile. Although not widely grown in our region, Virginia grown Vermentino has been highly revered and among the best wines in the Commonwealth year after year–this vintage is destined to join that elite class of achievement! Most commonly paired with seafood and other dishes suitable for fine white wine.

Deadrise

The deadrise boat is perhaps the most characteristic and quintessential image of the coastal portion of Virginia, where the fertile soils of the Chesapeake Bay region produce unique and desirable flavors in our grapes. This dry white wine is deserving of its name, as it pairs impeccably with fish, oysters, crabs, and other seafood that are harvested daily from nearby waters aboard these unique watercrafts with a flat V-shaped hull. Complex fruity nose and flavors.

Sauvignon Blanc

Originating from Bordeaux but widely grown throughout the world, Sauvignon Blanc is known for its herbal fruity flavors and racy acidity! This vintage is no exception as it boasts refreshing crispness and great minerality. After fermentation, this wine is aged in stainless steel and carefully crafted into a dry varietal to avoid masking the wine’s natural exuberant flavors that are sure to please!

Cayuga White

Cayuga White is a French-American hybrid grape seldom grown in Virginia. After a taste of this farm grown varietal, you will wonder why! A touch of sweetness accents the natural citrus and tropical flavors creating big and bold competing fruit character. An exceptionally favorable growing season ripened our grapes to perfection providing crispness and acidity which balance flawlessly! This wine is extraordinarily versatile and commonly listed as a favorite of our winemaking team–we have no doubt it will soon be a household name and on your list of favorite wines as well! Light and crisp varietal wine; technically “dry” with less than 1% residual sugar but softer on the palate; potent nose and fruitiness including apricot, apple, as well as citrus and tropical flavors.

Vidal Blanc

Vidal Blanc is a French grape created by blending Trebbiano Toscano with Seibel. While initially created for cognac production in France, it was soon found that the grape thrived most in North America, particularly in the Eastern part of United States, where it is widely grown. Our Vidal Blanc is balanced nicely by our grapes’ natural acidity and zesty fruitiness producing enticing aromatics and soothing tropical flavors. Bright fruit flavors highlight this off-dry varietal that is a superstar among Virginia Wines.

Pino Gris

Pinot Gris or Pinot Grigio? What is the difference? Actually, both are made from the same variety of grape and the only difference is the traditional origin–France vs. Italy! Our Virginia version is crisp and refreshing, made most like the French “Gris” being harvested later. This allows flavor complexity to increase and also allows us to produce a higher alcohol content. Pinot is unique in that the skin of the grape is dark, but it produces white wine. The clusters are very tight making it prone to disease and rot thus requiring daily monitoring during harvest time to pick at the ideal moment.

Traminette

Floral & spicy flavors abound in this off-dry varietal that pairs well with lighter summer fares such as salad, chicken, and seafood but also bold enough to pair with spicy dishes. Originally created as a table grape, it was quickly noted that Traminette displayed extraordinary quality and promise as a wine grape, displaying the same characteristics as its acclaimed parent, Gewurtztraminer. Widely grown through Virginia and into the Northeast, Traminette has built a reputation as a distinguished wine and this vintage is a testament to that!

Moscato

Over 200 of varieties of Muscat grapes are known and most commonly grow in Italy, where they produce famous Moscato wines! Our efforts to grow these large, plump berries in Virginia has been rewarded with spectacular flavors and high quality wine! Moscato is a very distinct wine highlighted by extensive sweet, fruity aroma and our version is no exception! Made slightly sweet and best enjoyed chilled, this vintage is sure to live up to your expectations!

Laurel

This sophisticated and unique blend results from the blending of several varieties of grapes that produce complementary strong, sweet aromatics. The predominant flavors include those of our Muscat grapes, most famously used for traditional Moscato wine, as well as Traminette, which retains and enhances many of the desired wine making qualities of its European parent, Gewurztraminer. With floral and fruity flavors ranging from apricot, pineapple, peach, honey, to citrus, it is a uniquely complex wine that is sure to be enjoyed by many.

Walking Tall

After countless requests, this wine pays homage to the unofficial mascot of our farm, Walking Tall Monster Truck! A common sight leaping school buses at our many agritourism events or making a guest appearance at the winery when not touring the country, the truck is a world class machine owned by the Wind family and driven by owner and assistant winemaker, Tyler Wind. This semi-sweet wine is one of the fruitiest you can find boasting tropical fruit flavors and ripe orchard aromas resulting from Brianna combined with native American grapes. The signature slogan on the side of Walking Tall boasts “It’s All About the Kids!” Let your inner child run free with this fun, fruity wine!

Red Wines

Rosé

Our rosé wine is made from our Chambourcin red grapes, processed differently to produce the desired flavor and character. In contrast to red wines, where the grapes are processed warm and fermented on the skins to extract color, tannins, and flavors, rose is created by chilling the same grapes down to 28 degrees prior to pressing to limit influence from the skins. The result is a remarkably crisp, flavorful wine with a fruit forward finish that is sure to please!

Merlot

This famous Bordeaux variety with loose, large berry clusters is the most widely planted grape in France but thrives in our Virginia climate. Compared to other popular red varieties, Merlot has thinner skin and less seeds which provides its characteristic smooth, velvety smooth finish. After a crushed skin contact fermentation, this wine underwent malolactic fermentation prior to aging in the finest oak casks. Merlot is unique in that it can take on a variety of flavors reflective of where and how it was grown. If the taste of this wine is any indication, our location and methods are well suited to highlight the potential of Merlot grapes!

Cabernet Franc

Cabernet Franc is one of the most widely planted grapes in the world and thrives exceptionally in our Virginia climate and soils. It is a parent grape of Cabernet Sauvignon as well as Merlot, and one of the classic Bordeaux varieties. These small, black colored berries were ripened to perfection during an exceptionally favorable growing season before undergoing crushed skin contact fermentation. Subsequently this wine underwent malolactic fermentation before aging in the highest quality oak casks. While traditionally paired with red meats, many of the unique flavors of this wine are best highlighted by any dish with spicy or smoked flavors.

Malbec

Originally from France where it is one of the famed Bordeaux varietals, Malbec has recently gained notoriety in South American vineyards. Malbec can be challenging to grow as it is susceptible to a wide variety of diseases which can compromise fruit quality, which is essential to outstanding wine. We are among the few Virginia growers willing to take the risks and do the extra work necessary to reap the rewards of a quality Malbec harvest. Our efforts have been more than rewarded with this vintage! An exceptional growing season coupled with the most diligent care and our fertile sandy soils yielded a remarkable crop that has become an exemplary wine. Move over Europe and South America, you have company at the top with VIRGINIA MALBEC!

River Rosé

Since our inception, we have sought to be unique! Here at Wind Vineyards, we have more estate grown varieties of grapes than any vineyard in the state, including some that to our knowledge are not grown anywhere else in Virginia! This wine is the result of blending several of these unique varieties. The result is a crisp, fruity off-dry rosé that will be sure to please many. It is the ultimate summertime porch and dock sipping wine in Eastern Virginia’s river region, but is suitable for year round enjoyment!

Rappahannock Breeze

The Rappahannock River courses 195 miles from the Blue Ridge Mountains to the Chesapeake Bay and is an important river in American history, as evidenced by countless artifacts discovered during the creation of our 700-acre farm estate. The same Blue Ridge minerality that produces the Rappahannock’s famous seafood flavors also impacts the soils of our vineyards, producing equally desirable wines. This particular wine is a blend of our Chambourcin grapes combined with unique native varietals, creating a slightly sweet red wine that most prefer to chill prior to consumption.

Sweeter Wines

Muré

Mure, the French word for blackberry! Prominent flavors abound in this sweeter offering from our fruit wine series. Some prefer this wine in the warmer months while others pair it with cold weather holidays! No matter when you desire it, the popular flavor of fresh blackberries is sure to please!

Liberty

“Give me liberty or give me death!” were the words spoken by the great patriot Patrick Henry at St. John’s Church in Richmond, VA. We exercised quite a bit of “liberty” as we carefully crafted this proprietary blend, which makes the perfect sweet, sipping wine. Many of the grape cultivars utilized in this blend are native to America, making this wine a true celebration of our freedom. The home depicted on the label is the “Honeymoon Cottage” located in Mechanicsville, VA, where Patrick Henry and his wife, Sarah, lived at the time of his famous speech in 1775. This historic property is currently owned by Tyler & Ashley Wind and listed on the National Register of Historic Places as well as Virginia Landmarks Register. Familiar tastes and smells are created by Concord, Niagara, and multiple varieties of muscadine combined to create this perfect “All-American” wine.

Cranberry

Wind Vineyards Cranberry Wine is a true fruit wine produced from 100% Cranberry juice. This wine is simultaneously sweet and tart, balancing nicely for an irresistibly delicious taste. This wine is sure to be a hit during winter holiday celebrations, but you will also find yourself craving it as a sweet sipping wine for year-round enjoyment. While many will enjoy this by the glass just like traditional wines, others capitalize on its versatility using it as an addition to recipes, as a mulled drink, or even as a dessert topping or mixer in beverages.

Peché

The prominent, unmistakable peach flavors will quickly let you know why this wine is named, Peche’, the French word for peach! Here at Wind Vineyards, we are not afraid to think outside the box! While we have a strong core of traditional wines, we also recognize great value in non-traditional beverages. It took extensive experimentation and great care to produce this light, refreshing, wine with just the right amount of sweetness! Best served chilled, many enjoy this wine during the warmer months while some use it as an aperitif year-round.
